What the Troponin I Test measures
Troponin I is a protein found in heart muscle cells. It is normally present in the blood at very low levels, and rises when the heart muscle has been injured.
Why it's done
- Assessing whether the heart muscle has been damaged, as directed by a doctor
- Follow-up testing after a cardiac event, on medical advice
How to prepare
No fasting is needed — eat and drink normally. Wear something with sleeves that roll up easily, and keep a list of any medicines you take handy for your phlebotomist.
Understanding your result
An elevated troponin is a significant finding and needs prompt medical review. A result within the reference range does not rule out a heart problem on its own. Always review results with a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Is an at-home troponin test suitable for a suspected heart attack?
No. A suspected heart attack is an emergency — call 112 or go to a hospital immediately. This test is for non-emergency follow-up, on your doctor's advice.
Do I need to fast for a troponin test?
No, troponin I does not require fasting.
